"It's the sort of environment I want to be a part of" says new signing, Elizabeth Shermer

Gloucester-Hartpury welcomed the addition of second-row, Elizabeth Shermer, ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Shermer says she’s settled in well at the Club.

“It’s been really fun, learning new things and the girls and coaches are great and have welcomed me with open arms.

“It’s obviously different, learning new systems, but everyone’s been really supportive, so actually it’s been a really smooth transition which is nice.”

Shermer joins another ex-Worcester Warriors forward at the Cherry & Whites, in Red Roses’ star, Alex Mathews. She said she’s happy to reunite with her former teammate.

“It was great to see Alex, she gave me a big cuddle on my first day when I saw here which was nice and it certainly makes it easier seeing a friendly face, but everyone has been great.”

The forward says the environment at the club attracted her to sign, after witnessing the atmosphere at Kingsholm in last year’s semi-final win over Bristol Bears.

“I came down to watch the semi-final against Bristol and the atmosphere was awesome, all the girls were there cheering the team on and that’s the sort of environment I want to be a part of, so I’m really happy to be here.”

Shermer says she’s looking forward to learning from the international stars at the Club.

“I’m so excited, I’ve already been training with them, and they know so much and it’s nice to be around people with such high standards because it makes you push yourself further.”

Sean Lynn’s side kick-off their Cup campaign with a home fixture at Hartpury Stadium against Loughborough Lightning on September 23. Shermer is itching to get out on the field.

“I’m literally buzzing for it. It’s been quite a long pre-season so I’m ready to actually play some rugby which will be cool.”

With the addition of Leicester Tigers and Trailfinders, to the cup and league this season, Shermer thinks the league will be more competitive than ever this year.

“I think the whole league this year is going to be really exciting. Everyone has recruited really well, so every game is going to be a fight.”

Shermer says a good cup campaign can help the team build momentum into the league season.

“If we can get good momentum in the Cup and make sure we’re getting those basics right it means we can hit the Prem running when everyone gets back from WXV.”

Finally, the second-row explained what Gloucester-Hartpury fans can expect from her in a Cherry & White shirt.

“I love tackling and set piece. I’m a line-out nerd, it’s quite embarrassing how much I love the line-out.

“So, hopefully the fans can expect to see a high work rate and solid set piece.”
