Why?

Two in three adults across Gloucestershire are overweight or obese, with 31% of 10-11 year olds and 23% of four to five year olds also overweight or obese. Barton and Tredworth ward within Gloucester has the highest rate of childhood obesity and excess weight in the County, ranking within the top 3% of all council wards in England.

Men living in deprived area of Gloucestershire live up to eight years less that those in more affluent areas, whilst the gap for women is six years. More than one in ten households live in fuel poverty.

Depression is the most common mental health illness within Gloucestershire, with Gloucester also having a higher than average suicide rate.

Gloucestershire has an ageing population, with the number of over 65’s projected to increase by 66% between 2014 and 2039, with Gloucester seeing the sharpest increase by 78%.

With this ageing population, a significant increase in dementia and health conditions linked to obesity are expected. Loneliness and isolation are widespread in Gloucestershire with the condition linked to an increased risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, cognitive decline, dementia, and depression.

To offer accessible opportunities that inspire people of all ages to lead healthier and more active lives.

We Will:

  • Collaborate with public and third sector partners to offer innovative, community centric approaches that use sport as a catalyst to improving health and wellbeing.
  • Use the power of Gloucester Rugby to inspire children and young people to adopt healthy lifestyles through delivering targeted interventions in schools that support lifestyle education and provide opportunities to be active.
  • Proactively engage with deprived communities at risk to significant health inequality, offering tailored interventions that promote health and wellbeing outcomes along with personal development opportunities.
  • Implement a game-changing approach to supporting men’s mental health through delivering resilience building group sessions at Kingsholm Stadium
  • Use the heritage of Gloucester Rugby to proactively tackle loneliness and isolation within older people whilst offering a new targeted programme to tackle dementia. Create a volunteer pathway for at risk individuals in line with social prescribing opportunities locally, recognising the overarching wellbeing benefits of volunteering.
