World Cup roundup | Week Two

Three Cherry & Whites were in action at the Rugby World Cup over the weekend. Louis Rees-Zammit, Albert Tuisue and Jonny May were all on the winning side for their respective countries.

First up was Louis Rees-Zammit as his Welsh side took on Portugal in Nice on Saturday. The flying winger managed to get on the scoreboard within the first 10 minutes.  However, it wasn’t all plain sailing for Wales despite the fast start. Credit to a tenacious Portuguese side that made Warren Gatland’s men fight for every inch. Ultimately, Wales did prove too strong and earned a bonus-point 28-8 victory.

Albert Tuisue was named amongst the replacement for Fiji’s crucial Pool C clash with Australia. The Fijians knew a win would keep their hopes of escaping the group alive. In a thrilling encounter that went down to the wire, it was indeed Fiji who achieved something they haven’t done since 1954, they beat Australia. In jubilant scenes, Tuisue and his teammates held on to win 22-15 in Saint-Etienne.

Finally, it was Jonny May’s turn to fly the Gloucester Rugby flag as he started on the wing in Nice on Sunday night. Following England’s opening weekend win against Argentina, another win would move them closer to qualification for the next stage. It was a game that struggled to get going, both sides finding it difficult to keep hold of the ball in a sticky night in eastern-central France. It wasn’t until Courtney Lawes crossed for a somewhat fortunate score in the 56th minute that England managed to turn the key and finish the game comfortably. A bonus-point 34-12 puts England firmly in control of Pool D.
