Participation

Why?

Only 8% of girls meet the Chief Medical Officer’s recommendation that young people aged 5 – 18 should do 60 minutes of physical activity every day. The figure for boys is double that at 16%. (YST Girls Active Survey 2017)

2017 Active Lives Survey shows 34% of adults with one impairment are inactive, increasing to 51% for those with three or more impairments.

36% of people aged 55 and over are currently inactive, compared to 26% of the population. Sport and activity can help tackle problems such as poor mental health, dementia, loneliness caused by bereavement, and addiction.

Our Ambition:

To ensure every person in Gloucestershire can play rugby in their community, regardless of age or ability.

We Will:

  • Inspire children and young people to take part in sport and physical activity more regularly through high quality coaching and teacher upskilling.
  • Inspire more children and young people from underrepresented groups in society to take part in rugby for the first time through the ‘Gallagher Project Rugby’ initiative.
  • Implement a new social rugby pathway within Gloucestershire which offers fully inclusive participation opportunities for children through to adults who have either a physical or learning disability.
  • Aim to be recognised as an industry leader for female participation, working with partners including Active Gloucestershire to achieve the highest female rugby union participation rates within teenage girls in the Country.
  • Promote elite level female participation through the Gloucester-Hartpury Women team, positioning the players as role models to the next generation through a new ambassador programme.
  • Offer the most comprehensive walking rugby programme in Premiership Rugby for older people, fusing participation opportunities with wider health and wellbeing support recognising the impact of loneliness in society.
